The notification process in PDMWE gives you 2 choices out of the box.
- Notification using the PDMWE data base
- Notification using SMTP
This Tech Tip will show the basics of how to set up both and explain the benefits and advantages of each set up.

Setting up Notification

Figure 1 shows where to start. In the PDMWE Administration window, open communication.

Once this is selected the choice of Database or SMTP is given.

Figure 2
If the PDMWE Database option is selected, no further configuration is needed.

Figure 3
What the recipient will see in the task bar.
If the SMPT option is selected the mail server name will have to be filled in.

At this time the Administrator can select the desired response for the email.
When the email is sent from the state change the recipient will have some options.

Advantages of both Database and SMTP notification

There are advantages and disadvantages to using both forms of notification.
Database notification
- Fully integrated in to PDMWE.
- Separate from corporate email. (Advantage or disadvantage?).
- Full functionality of buttons in the notification (View, Open folder, Properties).
- Easy setup.
SMTP Notification
- Single email inbox.
- Able to notify recipients outside the organization.
- Separate set up from an IT standpoint (Advantage or disadvantage?).
- Full functionality of buttons is NOT available in the notification (View, Open folder, Properties).

Conclusion

Setting up notification has benefits for each configuration. This will have to be determined by the Administrator. This must also be decided upon at the beginning of the installation.
The type of notification can be changed after the initial setup. But they can not be used simultaneously
