JM Consult selects SolidWorks software to design heavy-duty machinery for eco-friendly oil drilling
#1 3D mechanical design software helps company quickly design very large assemblies
CONCORD, Mass., May 16, 2005 ? JM Consult (JMC), Norway's leader in coiled-tubing surface equipment and services, is standardizing on SolidWorks® software to design and analyze its specialized heavy-duty oil exploration equipment.
JMC's coiled-tubing drilling employs a hose-like device rather than pipes to drill well holes. It can be quicker, cheaper, safer, quieter, more flexible, and more environmentally friendly than traditional derrick-based, pipe-driven drilling methods. Coiled-tubing systems are also valuable for repairing and modifying oil wells under pressure, a process called snubbing.
JMC manufactures a wide range of equipment for coiled-tubing drilling, including support structures that are a fraction of the size of a derrick, jacking frames, pipehandlers, and drum/reel assemblies that coil and uncoil the tubing as it goes in and out of the well hole. These products typically consist of as many as 6,000 separate parts and are customized for each customer, making delivery time a critical challenge for the company.
?We chose SolidWorks 3D mechanical design software because it's easier to use than our previous software as well as the alternatives we evaluated, and it lets us more deeply incorporate 3D design in our work,? said Torstein Thomassen, JMC engineering project manager. ?At the same time, it's powerful enough for all the designs we need to create and will help us more quickly deliver new products to our customers.? Key JMC customers include Statoil, Halliburton, and Schlumberger.
JMC has found SolidWorks weldment capabilities particularly valuable in reducing drawing time, and suppliers have been impressed by their new ability to understand 3D models with the SolidWorks eDrawings? e-mail-enabled viewing and publishing tool. JMC will use SolidWorks' PDMWorks® software to efficiently manage its design data and control revisions. The company will also use COSMOSWorks® design validation software to ensure its designs will withstand the enormous stresses and strains of well-drilling, maintenance, and repair.
?The fact that SolidWorks is the mechanical design software of choice for a company like JMC speaks volumes about its flexibility and scalability,? said Tobias Andersson, country manager for SolidWorks in Northern Europe. ?Whether an engineer is designing a single part or a 6,000-part assembly that will undergo literally tons of stress and strain, SolidWorks makes the job quicker, easier, and simpler.?
JM Consult works with authorized SolidWorks reseller CAE Consult Scandinavia AS (CCS) for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.
