SolidWorks software helps Metso Texas Shredder quickly hammer out durable products

CONCORD, Mass., May 31, 2006 ? Metso Texas Shredder, Inc. is using SolidWorks® software to design powerful machines that grind up automobiles, refrigerators, and other metal products in seconds. SolidWorks enables the company to cut design time in half, reduce errors, and streamline custom retrofit part development.
The largest shredder manufacturer in the country, Metso Texas Shredder builds machines for metal recycling facilities around the world. Its shredders use heavy hammers spinning on a rotor at up to 600 RPM to fragmentize a whole car into fist-sized pieces in 10 seconds. The machines must be durable to process more than 300 cars an hour and handle dense unshreddable pieces that are fed into the shredder. The company standardized on SolidWorks to design all of its custom replacement parts.
?SolidWorks allows us to quickly and accurately perform design analysis including parts weight and center of gravity calculations to ensure our machines will continue to perform as expected,? said Metso Texas Shredder Design Engineer Felipe Gonzalez. ?With our 2D software, we had to calculate each part's weight by hand to get a rough estimate. We also had to redraw designs to incorporate changes. SolidWorks saves time by giving us exact weight figures and automating design changes.?
Vibration and constant use take a toll on shredders. The company uses SolidWorks to ensure the accuracy of existing designs and accelerate development of new designs. The software automates weldment creation so engineers can quickly and accurately design metal joints that will withstand the fierce shocks from the shredding process.
According to Gonzalez, using SolidWorks has reduced design time from four weeks to two. Intuitive tables allow engineers to plug in different part specifications to accelerate customization. Engineers also use SolidWorks to create compelling 3D models of its products for sales presentations and internal project reviews for management.
