SUCCESS METRICS
- Shortened design period by 75%.
- Lowered development costs by 50%.
- Reduced design errors by 90%.
The Challenge
Many of the original part and assembly design concepts were derived singularly culminating in a complex and cumbersome product to manufacture. Adding more parts solved each new need for functionality. A new concept tool in which multiple part functionality could be integrated in order to reduce part and manufacturing costs was required.
The Solution
All design work from inception was created using a 2D DOS-based CAD/CAM package. The candidates for the new software package were AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, Inventor, Pro/ENGINEER, and several specialized sheet metal packages. The drawbacks from these packages, among other things, were cost, limitations on versatility for machined parts such as sheet metal, additional purchases for software modules. All of this added complexity to the licensing and integration issues between modules. SolidWorks software posed none of these drawbacks, and the sheetmetal capabilities are extraordinary.
