Istanbul Technical University Solar Boat Team
SUCCESS METRICS
- Shortened research and development cycle from 20 months to one month
- Cut prototyping costs by 66 percent
- Accelerated contributions of new team members
- Won multiple competition-related design awards
The Challenge
The Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Solar Boat Team is one of the world’s most successful student teams, placing as a top three finalist every year that it has competed at the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) International SOLAR SPLASH®, the world championship of intercollegiate solar/electric boating. When founded, the team needed 3D design and simulation tools to refine design concepts, eliminate costly prototyping, and facilitate communications.
The Solution
The ITU Solar Boat Team standardized on the SolidWorks® Education Edition 3D CAD platform and later added SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks Flow Simulation software. The team chose SolidWorks solutions because they are easy to learn, include surfacing tools, and provide integrated simulation capabilities. By choosing SolidWorks, the ITU Solar Boat Team shortened its design cycle from 20 months to one month, cut prototyping costs by 66 percent, accelerated contributions of new team members, and won multiple competition-related design awards.
