North Carolina State University
The Challenge
Design Research Laboratories is a part of North Carolina State University's School of Design. Our mission is to provide research and analysis of design tools, such as the current state-of-the art design software to be used by the School of Design. The university is using other CAD packages that provide satisfactory 2D and 3D presentation. However, none of these packages is an all-in-one precision CAD package, solid modeler, and rendering tool. We chose to look into SolidWorks CAD software, which provided a complete alternative.
The Solution
In contrast to Pro/ENGINEER, the main modeling package at North Carolina State, SolidWorks CAD software uses the familiar Windows interface and is highly adaptable since it can be installed on Intel-based PCs. The GUI is excellent, and familiar Windows NT-based menus provide a great opportunity for testers and trainees to produce professional 3D models in a very short time. SolidWorks CAD software also provides output in major file formats, which enables export to graphics packages such as PhotoWorks software.
