Southmedic, Inc. has designed and manufactured surgical and specialty operating room products for OEM and end-user markets since the company’s inception. For many years, Southmedic leveraged 2D CAD technology to support product development. In 1997, our company management recognized the limitations of using the existing Cadkey® CAD system and began evaluating 3D approaches to product design. We had pushed the limits of our CADKEY system and needed something that was more reliable and robust. Also, we wanted to improve the efficiency of our product development effort in order to enter new markets. By exploiting the productivity gains of a proven 3D solid modeler, we believed we could create new, innovative products and tap new, emerging markets.
After evaluating several 3D packages, including Pro/ENGINEER and Solid Edge, we selected the SolidWorks 3D CAD system because of its exclusive focus on mechanical design, proven parametric features, bi-directional associativity, ease-of-use, advanced visualization capabilities, integration with leading engineering applications, and company philosophy. We ran many different packages and really liked SolidWorks CAD software. We wanted a system that made it easy to design what’s in your mind, not what the CAD system allows or forces you to do. We chose SolidWorks CAD software because we believed it would help us design faster and perceived SolidWorks to be a company focused on making the tool easier to use with every revision.
