3D Video, Inc.

The NuView attaches to the front of almost any camcorder and lets the user record and play back video in 3D.

The Results

  • Reduced design time by 50%
  • Saved weeks of work by using solid modeling and PhotoWorks
  • Replaced weeks of building and testing with just hours of conservative redesign
  • Created functioning prototypes in just days through rapid prototyping from STL part files

"With SolidWorks CAD software, we achieved a free-flowing artistic design using sweeps, curves, and lofts. The result is excellent consumer acceptance of a truly innovative product."
- Thomas Riederer, Chief Engineer

The Challenge

3D Video, Inc., a start-up company with an exciting new product in the consumer video market, needed to respond to the pressures of budget, resources, functionality, and aesthetics while launching a great product on time. It was clear we needed solid modeling as well as FEA, rapid prototyping, rapid tooling, and CNC CAM. We selected a high-end PC running Windows NT for the hardware platform and decided that the modeling software had to be user friendly to minimize the learning curve.

The Solution

SolidWorks CAD software was the hands-down favorite, a full-featured package for a "teaser" price. Further considerations – from its feature richness and partner applications to its reputation for consistent releases of major upgrades –- verified that SolidWorks was the way to go. Other systems just seemed too complex. SolidWorks Simulation produced a seamless FEA stress analysis. With imported IGES files, the mold makers completed all the production injection molds in under six weeks, with no compatibility problems. The interference checker confirmed fits, so we avoided mistakes and delays. "Art-to-part" meant virtually no major problems, circumventing the typical one-to-two months mold rework cycle. We bet our company's future on the ability of SolidWorks software to perform as promised. It did.
