Daka International Ltd.
Daka used SolidWorks to develop the One Touch™ Automatic Jar Opener, which automatically opens jars at the press of a button.
The Results
- Shortened design time by 45 percent
- Lowered development costs by by 45 percent
- Completed mass production in just three months instead of the typical 9 months
- Achieved sales of $5 million (US) in fiscal year 2007-2008

The Challenge
Daka International Ltd. is an award-winning design and development company from Hong Kong, is a leader in applying technology to consumer products and has developed a strong intellectual property portfolio. As designers and engineers, our work is varied. Daka and its sub-contractor - MAS Design Products Ltd. - wanted a CAD system that combines ease of use with power, so that even though we are not full-time CAD operators, we can quickly tackle complex geometry problems, find solutions, and use the system to drive design data from concept design through to the marketing, manufacturing, and documentation processes.
The Solution
The company chose SolidWorks because of its ease-of-use and power. Other solutions required full-time CAD operators and ongoing training. SolidWorks is easy to learn and use and provides the power and accuracy to develop both external, aesthetic aspects of the design, and the complex internal mechanical functions. For example, real-time mating and motion simulations were critical to the development of the new, patented, mechanically timed cutter mechanism on this jar opener product. SolidWorks helped the company shape the complex geometry required to create a mechanism using only three moving parts.
