Christiansen Engineering
Four-cylinder engine comprised of 62 parts
"SolidWorks enables us to design products quickly and to use the same data as proof of concept, for analysis, prototyping, machining, and sales materials."
- Ted Christiansen, P.E., Owner/Operator
The Challenge
Christiansen Engineering is a premier engineering consulting firm specializing in the design, analysis, and development of an array of automotive, consumer, machine, and tooling products. Christiansen needed a CAD system with the modeling power of high-end systems -- and an affordable price. The package also had to allow sketches to be edited without their “children” being lost. In addition, the modeling process and user interface had to be intuitive and easy to use.
The Solution
After considering a number of packages, the Christiansen staff found everything they needed in SolidWorks. One of SolidWorks strongest assets is the ability to edit sketches to develop concepts quickly. The software also provides feedback on sketches, giving users information to correct problems when they occur. Another powerful feature, the configuratison manager, allows users to view selected components of an assembly or turn off fillets for FEA analysis. In addition, SolidWorks provides an excellent database. Each part, assembly, and drawing is a separate file on disk. This approach keeps models simple and allows quick replacement of parts, if desired, merely by changing the filename reference. The firm uses a variety of SolidWorks Solution Partner products, including FEMAP Professional for analysis.
