Why might SolidWorks 2010 (or SolidWorks Explorer 2010) not start after rebooting the computer? This is a known issue that only appears under the following conditions: Microsoft Windows® XP 32-bit + specific Data Execution Prevention (DEP) settings. The problem has been submitted to the SolidWorks Development team with the SPR below: SPR 524232: SolidWorks 2010 no longer starts after the computer has been restarted. Note that using another user account to start SolidWorks via Run As allows SolidWorks to start until next reboot... The workaround to this is as follows: 1. Right Mouse Button on My Computer and select Properties 2. On the Advanced tab>Performance>click Settings 3. Go to the Data Execution Prevention tab and most likely the setting "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" will be active 4. In the exception list see if Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) is listed. If it is, then select it and choose to Remove it from the list 5. OK out of all settings windows and reboot. Special case: When doing Step 3 above if the user currently has the option "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" active, then do these alternate steps: 4. Toggle the other DEP option on so the list of possibly previously specified exceptions can be accessed 5. If Windows Explorer is in that exceptions list, then do the following process: a. Remove Windows Explorer from the list b. Reboot c. Go back in the DEP interface again and set the option back to “Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" d. Reboot once more. |

SolidWorks System Requirements The SolidWorks System Requirements page has been updated for the upcoming release of SolidWorks 2010. The Operating System changes include the following: 1) Adding Support for Windows 7 - SolidWorks products will run on Microsoft Windows 7 operating system starting with the 2010 release. Microsoft's published shipment date for Windows 7 is Oct 22nd. Thus, the earliest version of SolidWorks 2010 products that can run on the Windows 7 operating system will be SP1. 2) Microsoft officially retired Windows XP in April of 2009. SolidWorks 2010 will continue to support Windows XP (32 and 64 bit versions) excluding operating systems related issues or fixes. This level of support will continue through at least one release following SolidWorks 2010. After that in conjunction with Microsoft's support policies, only Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32 and 64 bit versions) will be supported. The SolidWorks operating system support plan outlined above will also apply to the SolidWorks Simulation and SolidWorks PDM product lines. For details, visit http://www.solidworks.com/sw/support/SystemRequirements.html. |
