ViaSat produces innovative satellite and other wireless communication products that enable fast, secure, and efficient communications to any location. Products include network security devices, tactical data radios, and communication simulators. ViaSat also has a full line of VSAT products for data and voice applications, and is a market leader in Ka-band satellite systems, from user terminals to large gateways.

Recently, SolidWorks Express spoke with Viasat mechanical design engineer Jason King about the decision to learn SolidWorks® software with SolidProfessor multimedia training modules.

What challenges led you to consider SolidProfessor training?

Visat used SolidWorks to desgin the SurfBeam, a low-cost broadband satellite modem.

"We have over a dozen designers/engineers in our group that migrate to SolidWorks updates at different times. In the past our VAR would provide onsite update training for our group, however with everyone not transitioned to the latest version much of the features would soon be forgotten and never used. With SolidProfessor 2005 Update each person can go through the update training at a time of their choosing and more importantly refresh certain topics when ever needed."

What are the benefits of using the training?
"Along with the SolidWorks software update, we provide a seat of SolidProfessor 2005 Update Training. The feedback has been extremely positive. SolidProfessor allows each member of our group to fit the update training into their schedules at the time that is most convenient. It also gives us the freedom to cover the topics that are of most interest to us and in any order that fits best with the users' schedules. Most of all it allows us to do a short refresher of any topic we choose whenever needed."

How do you expect using SolidProfessor will impact your company in the future?

"Using SolidProfessor can allow us to keep up with the latest features of SolidWorks as each new version comes out; which will in turn allow us to continually improve our skill set and perform our jobs better."
