A number of advanced modeling features are introduced in SolidWorks® 2005 software to help you better create complex shapes. Many of these functions also help improve your handling of existing geometry.

Deform

The curve-to-curve deform option has a wide variety of uses. In the example below, the key is to fix the back and bottom faces and only let the front edge deform.

Flex

The Flex feature has a number of options (see images below). The values for the flex can be entered into the Property Manager or you can select the outside edge of the profile and drag it until the desired shape is created. The cursor changes once it reaches the correct location. The first example shows a twist.

The following examples show the bend option. Note the cursor changes type based on the selection.

Conclusion

Many of these feature types can be used to create differing shapes based on what you have to start with and the desired end results. These features are interactive and allow for the direct interaction and modification within the graphics area.
