Jevons Robotics Speeds Development of Hazardous-material Transport Robots

Mining industry equipment manufacturer accelerates development, reduces fabrication iterations, and improves assembly build time while reducing costs with SOLIDWORKS and 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions.

Challenge

Quickly and cost-effectively develop an automated electric robotic vehicle for use by the mining industry when traveling in difficult, dangerous terrain and when carrying hazardous materials, such as explosives, to meet several customer deadlines.

Solution

Implement modeling, design, data management, simulation, collaboration, and communication solutions from the 3DEXPERIENCE® Works portfolio, which operate on the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Result

  • Accelerated development
  • Saved time and money with simulation
  • Reduced fabrication iterations
  • Improved assembly build time while reducing costs

Jevons Robotics is a Perth, Australia-based startup founded in 2021 that specializes in developing robotic solutions to enhance safety in the mining industry. Staffed by seasoned mining professionals, Jevons Robotics is dedicated to innovative uses of AI, robotics, and advanced computing technologies. The company aims to transform the handling of hazardous materials in mining environments with their first major product, the ARTEV6000.

There are inherent risks involved with mining, especially in transporting hazardous materials such as explosives across challenging terrain. The urgent need for safer and more efficient transport solutions is underscored by lives lost from past tragedies within the industry. To meet pressing customer deadlines, Jevons Robotics was tasked with rapidly developing an automated electric robotic vehicle capable of navigating difficult terrain and carrying explosive materials.

Building Cutting-edge Robotics

To tackle these challenges, Jevons Robotics replaced its design software with the 3DEXPERIENCE® Works portfolio from Dassault Systèmes. This suite includes SOLIDWORKS®, browser-based design tools, data management, simulation, collaboration, and communication tools, all integrated in a cloud-based platform. This strategic shift was driven by the need for a familiar, easy-to-learn software environment, which the company found in SOLIDWORKS, a tool well-established among the Australian engineering community.

David Crosbie, Jevons Robotics Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the seamless transition to the new software, noting the lack of a steep learning curve and extensive training typically associated with new technology adoption: “The cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform not only supported our rapid growth but also significantly cut down our time to market, thanks to its intuitive design and robust simulation capabilities.”

The simulation studies that we ran using 3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions resulted in faster development time because we can rapidly validate new ideas and concepts. We also conducted simulations on important systems affecting performance, such as the chassis, fine positioning system frames, and high-voltage module latch components. When we ran factor-of-safety analyses on each subsystem, to comply with safety requirements, we were able to quickly turnaround concept improvements that increased safety. At the same time, we were able to use simulation to reduce fabrication iteration requirements, which helps us optimize build and assembly time to reduce costs

Real-world Benefits Throughout Development

The cloud-based platform facilitated the simultaneous design and integration of various subsystems, which accelerated the development cycle of the ARTEV6000. In addition, simulation tools enabled early detection and correction of design flaws. This capability significantly minimized the reliance on physical prototypes, thus saving time and money.

“When we ran factor-of-safety analyses on each subsystem to comply with safety requirements, we were able to quickly turn around concept improvements that increased safety,” Crosbie continues. “At the same time, we were able to use simulation to reduce fabrication iteration requirements, which helps us optimize build and assembly time to reduce costs.”

Innovation to Minimize Workplace Risks

Following successful proof of concept tests in early 2024, the ARTEV6000 is set for deployment in the Pilbara (Western Australia) region’s iron ore mines by mid-2024. This initial application will involve transporting an explosive mix used in mining operations, with plans to add the capability to transport other hazardous materials for additional industries.

Crosbie stresses, “3DEXPERIENCE Works solutions have played a major role in helping us develop products that remove people from hazardous situations. He concludes, “These cloud-based tools have proven to be a great advantage to us as we resolve safety issues in the mining industry.”
