Innovating Oral Care: How TUSK Reengineered the Electric Toothbrush

SOLIDWORKS Design helps an oral care industry innovator integrate charging, storage, travel, and hygiene into one electric toothbrush.

Challenge

Traditional electric toothbrushes rely on bulky proprietary charging docks that collect dirt and travel poorly, and every proprietary charger adds manufacturing waste and works against sustainability goals

Solution

3D modeling with SOLIDWORKS Design as part of the SOLIDWORKS for Startups program lets the team integrate and position every component accurately before physical production

Results

  • A sleek, marker-pen-inspired design that charges through a universal USB-C port
  • Reduced environmental impact by eliminating the need for a single-purpose proprietary charger
  • Confident management of a 121-component assembly, verified before any physical build
  • An engineering team able to resolve queries quickly and keep the development cycle on track

Great products start by solving real problems. For TUSK, an oral care brand based in Mumbai, that problem was the electric toothbrush itself. Inspired by the strength of the elephant tusk and the positive spirit of Lord Ganesha, the brand set out to reimagine a device most people take for granted. They also built it all locally, handling the complete design and development cycle in-house.

Fixing the Flaws Traditional Designs Ignored

If you look closely at most electric toothbrushes, you'll spot the same design compromises. Bulky charging docks force the brush to stand upright, collect dirt over time and travel poorly. Worse, every dock demands its own proprietary cable, which means one more charger to pack and one more piece of hardware the planet doesn't need.

Tusk approached these issues as engineering challenges, not accessories to accept. Their answer is a sleek, marker-pen-inspired form that charges through a USB-C port. By matching the same standard already used by mobile phones, Tusk removed the need to manufacture yet another single-purpose charger. The result is a cleaner design, a lighter travel kit and a smaller environmental footprint

Managing Complexity Through Digital Design

Behind that simple exterior sits a genuinely complex product: 45 primary components and 76 micro components that all have to fit and function together. Managing that level of detail by guesswork isn't an option.

Tusk moved from early sketches to full 3D modeling in SOLIDWORKS Design, giving the team precise control over how every part integrates before anything physical gets built. Cloud-based data management keeps all product information secure and accessible, so the engineering team works from a single source of truth. That structure matters when you're coordinating hundreds of parts and iterating fast.

From Screen to Prototype

Digital models only prove their worth when they hold up in the real world. Tusk bridges that gap with 3D printing. Once a design is finalized, print-ready files generate physical prototypes for testing and validation. Each iteration confirms that what's on the screen translates accurately into a working product, cutting the risk of costly surprises later in development.

Support That Keeps a Startup Moving

For two years, Tusk has taken part in the SOLIDWORKS for Startup program, receiving five software licenses along with specialized guidance. This support enables the engineering team to resolve questions quickly and independently, without pulling founders into every technical decision. The development cycle keeps its momentum, and the final product meets the high standards that today's oral care market expects.

Tusk shows what happens when engineering discipline meets a clear design vision. Solve the right problems, use the right tools and the product speaks for itself.
